Some of our patients leave an unforgettable mark on everyone they meet, and Alfie, a 12-year-old Silky Terrier, is certainly one of them.

If you've ever met Alfie, you'll know exactly why. He's the sweetest little gentleman, with a gentle soul, expressive ears, and a quiet determination that has carried him through more than most dogs ever face.

Earlier this year, what began as an investigation into some ongoing health changes led to the discovery of a large mass on Alfie's liver. Further imaging suggested the mass was suitable for surgical removal, but as with any major surgery—particularly involving the liver—the decision wasn't a simple one. There were risks to consider, difficult conversations to have, and many unknowns.

Throughout it all, one thing never wavered: the love and dedication of Alfie's family.

David and Glenda carefully considered every option, asked thoughtful questions, and ultimately chose to proceed with surgery because they wanted to give their beloved boy every possible chance. Their unwavering commitment to Alfie's wellbeing was something our whole team admired.

On surgery day, Alfie underwent a partial liver lobectomy performed by Dr Tien Le. The procedure was successful, with the liver mass removed completely and no evidence of spread seen during surgery. Even more impressive was Alfie himself—recovering calmly, comfortably, and even heading out for a gentle walk later that afternoon, proving once again just how resilient our little patients can be.

Stories like Alfie's remind us why we do what we do.

Veterinary medicine is about far more than treating illness. It's about helping families navigate difficult decisions, celebrating the victories—big and small—and being there every step of the journey.

Alfie still has his recovery ahead of him, but he's already shown us what courage looks like in a tiny package. We feel incredibly privileged to have been trusted with his care, and we're so grateful to David and Glenda for allowing us to share Alfie's story.

Everyone here at Swan Street Vets is cheering Alfie on as he continues his recovery. We know there will be plenty of cuddles waiting for him at home—and we can't wait to see his bright little face back in the clinic for happier visits.

You've got this, Alfie. We're all so proud of you. ❤️
